Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn in pots and place in an open frame to germinate.

Take soft tip cuttings of non-flowering shoots during late spring and semi hardwood cuttings during late summer.


Botanic information
Leaf: The mid-green leaves are broad ovate with a cordate base and a slightly undulating crenulate margin. The apex is obtuse and the petiole is up to 30mm (1½ in) long. When young the leaves are bronze and, during autumn, turn yellow, orange to red.

Flower: The tree is dioecious and the flowers appearing before the leaves. The small male flowers have numerous stamens and are solitary or in opposite pairs in the leaf axils at the end of the branches. The female has 4-fringed sepals and contains 4 to 6 carpels. They appear during spring.

Fruit: The slender dehiscent follicle is up to 20mm (µin) long and is arranged in groups of 2 to 4 on short peduncles and the thin seeds have a papery wing. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
