Propagation
Sow fresh seed when ripe and require stratifying and place in an open frame to germinate.

Note:
It is also cultivated for its hard dark timber and care should be taken when selecting a sight as the tree has vigorous roots that can lift concrete and block drains.


Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green leaves are elliptical to ovate and the apex is acuminate. It has a 25mm (1in) long pubescent petiole and the underside of the leaf is dull green. The buds are reddish black, ovoid, sessile and solitary with 2 overlapping scales.

Flower: The flowers are generally dioecious. The female cyathiform flower has expanded petals with a leaf-like calyx and appears solitary in the leaf axils. The male flowers are smaller and are arranged in a cluster and both appear during spring.

Fruit: The plum size globose pulpy berry is pale orange with a reddish flush usually on one side and has persistent enlarged calyx lobes. The edible fruit is bitter until subject to frost and the juice was used by Native Americans to treat piles and thrush.
