Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn in pots and place in a cold frame to germinate. Remove the fleshy seed coat prior to sowing.
Divide the rhizome (pips) during autumn.
Note:
This plant thrives on neglect once established and is used as a ground cover. It may also be potted up and displayed as an indoor plant during the flowering period.
Botanic information
Leaf: The mid-green leaves are oblong to elliptical and are arranged in unequal size pairs with a long petiole and have an acuminate apex. The veins are parallel and the texture is soft-leathery.
Flower: The small nodding campanulate flowers appear in a one-sided arching terminal raceme. It appears on a leafless scape that is up to 250mm (10in) tall that grows from the base of the leaves. They appear during late spring.
Fruit: The small berries are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively. The berries are regarded as very poisonous if ingested.
