Propagation
Seeds require scarification by nicking the seed coat and soaking in water for 24 hours prior to sowing.
Stratify fresh seeds for 2 to 3 months at 5º C (41ºF) then sow in spring and maintain a temperature of 12º to 15º C. (55º to 59º F).

Care should be taken when selecting a sight as the tree has vigorous roots that can lift concrete and block drains.


Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green leaves are cordate to broad ovate with glaucous undersides. The apex is abruptly acuminate and the base is cordate with a petiole up to 30mm (1¥in) long. Small tufts of hairs are found in the vein axils on the underside of the leaf.

Flower: The small crateriform flowers have 5-petals and 5-sepals with numerous stamens and are arranged in a terminal pendant cyme up to 80mm (3in) wide. The stalk is long and the light green floral bract is up to 90mm (3½in) long by 20mm (µin) wide. The flowers appear in early summer.
Note
The ovary is superior with two or more chambers with one or more ovules.

Fruit: The rounded pubescent nut-like capsule is thin-shelled and is smooth or has light ribs. The seeds are associated with a leaf-like bract.

General pruning information

Tolerates pruning to maintain a smaller size for street planting during summer allowing the wounds to heal. As a tree, train to a single leader and remove dead or damaged branches back to the collar
