Propagation
Separate seeds from pulp by soaking in water then stratify for 2 to 3 months during winter. Sow seeds in pots or flats then place them in cool position to germination which may take up to two years.
Young plants are easily transplanted during winter.
Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green leaves vary from obovate to oblong and are up to 40mm (1½in) wide. The texture is leather and the apex is obtuse to acute with a petiole up to 12mm (½in) long. They are arranged alternately on branches that have thorns that are up to 75mm (3in) long. The sessile oblong buds are solitary or branched and have 6 red-brown scales.
Flower: The small crateriform flowers have pink anthers and 5-slightly expanded petals. They are arranged in an axillary corymb that is up to 750mm (3in) wide and appear from late spring to early summer.
Fruit: The fleshy pome-like spherical drupe contains up to five 1-seeded nutlets and are persistent on the plant during early winter.
