Propagation
Sow fresh seed during spring and maintain a temperature of 12º to 15º C. (55º to 59º F).
Take a semi-hardwood cuttings during summer apply bottom heat.
Divide suckers during spring.
Graft varieties onto species rootstock.
Note:
Care should be taken when selecting a sight as the tree has vigorous roots that can lift concrete and block drains.
Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green leaves are ovate to elliptical with an acuminate apex and an uneven almost cordate base and the petiole up to 50mm (2in) long. The underside has prominentun-forked veins that are downy along the axils. During autumn the leaves turn bright yellow before falling.
Flower: The clusters of tiny red campanulate flowers are arranged on short pendant stems up to 12mm (½in) long. The obovate buds appear stalked with small imbricate ciliate scales. The flowers appear during spring.
Fruit: The flat samara is surrounded by a wing and has a small notch at the tip. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
