Propagation
Divide established clumps during spring.
Remove offsets during summer and replant into an organic mix.
Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy concaved stiff lethery leaves have fine serrations along the margins and an acuminate apex. The leaves can attain a length of 1m (3ft) and up to 15 are arranged in broad rosette.
Flower: The red tubular flowers have reflexed petals that are tipped in violet and are arranged in a dense terminal panicle. The scape is short and is covered in orange-pink lanceolate shaped bracts and emerges from the center of the rosette during summer.
Fruit: The small berry is not commonly used and the plant is normally reproduced vegetatively.
Culture
Temperature
The plants require a minimum temperature of 12.7ºC (55ºF)and may require a temperature of 24ºC (75ºF)to produce flowers.
Light
Most exotic bromeliaeds require bright indirect light only plants simular to Pineapples requiring full sun.
Water
These plants require well drained media and should be watered regular and kept moist but not wet. The vase forms should be filled with fresh water monthly and a humid environment is required. This may be achieved with regular misting of the foliage. Foliar fertiliser may be sprayed onto the foliage every 4 to 5 weeks during summer.
