Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn in pots and in cold climates place in a cold frame.

Take root cuttings taken during winter.
Aerial layering is carried out during the growing period.

Culture
This shrub will produce better autumn foliage colour and flowers if the winters are cold and the summer is hot and dry (Mediterranean climate).
If the shrub is grown for its foliage cut back hard during winter, but if it is grown for its flowers little pruning is required.

Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are oval to broad elliptical with a petiole up to 25mm (1in) long, reddish maturing to mid green. The apex is obtuse and during autumn the leaves turn yellow-orange to bronze before falling.

Flower: The tiny cream coloured flowers have extended pedicles that are filamentous (covered in spreading hairs) which are yellow turning reddish. These are arranged in a large loose terminal panicle that gives a 'smoky' effect and they appear during early summer.

Fruit: The small drupe is compressed and flattened, becoming dry and light in colour. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
