Propagation
Sow fresh seed from autumn to spring in pots and in cold climates place in a cold frame.
Note:
Care should be taken when selecting a sight as the tree has vigorous roots that can lift concrete and block drains.
Botanic information
Leaf: The long slender twisted leaves are arranged in bundles of 3 and are persistent on the tree for up to 9-years. When crushed they produce a strong lemon scent and have a stiff texture.
Note
The reddish brown buds are cylindrical up to 20mm (΅in) long and the appressed scales are resinous.
Flower: The male catkin-like flowers are reddish becoming yellow and appear in pairs or in a small cluster at the end of the branches. The tiny dark purple pistillate (female) flowers are arranged terminally and appear during spring.
Fruit: The long ovoid pendant cone is yellow-grey with each scale having a sharp spine. When releasing seeds the cone falls from the tree. The 6mm (₯in) long purplish-brown seed has a 25mm (1in) long wing.
