Propagation
Sow fresh seed during early spring and pre-soak seeds in heated water 13º to 18ºC (55º-64ºF) for 24 hours. Seeds may require scarification. Germination is difficult and may take up to 2 years.
Take cuttings during summer and place them on a misting bench.
Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green leaves are oblong to ovate with the margin finely toothed mainly towards the acute apex. The leaf is slightly concave with the upper surface covered in short hairs and the petiole is short and tends to run down the stem.
Flower: The pink labiate flowers have a single lower lip and an upper lip that is divided into 4-lobes with 4-protruding stamens. They are arranged in the leaf axils and appear as a leafy spike-like inflorescence from spring to early summer.
Fruit: The 2 to 4 chambered hard ovoid drupe is indehiscent, dry and sometimes splitting at the apex. There are 1 to 3 hard-coated seeds per chamber and they are difficult to germinate. The plant is normally reproduced vegetatively.
