Botanic information
Leaf: The light green palmate leaves have 5-lanceolate leaflets with short stalks and tend to droop at the end of the long petiole. When crushed the leaves smell poorly and during autumn turn yellowish before falling.
Flower: The small greenish-yellow funnelform flowers have 4-petals with the 2-upper marked in orange-brown and have yellow protruding stamens. The flowers are arranged in a terminal conical panicle that is up to 18cm (7in) long and appear during spring.
Fruit: The spiky dehiscent capsular fruit is usually solitary. It contains 2-rounded brown seeds that have a bitter taste and is inedible. Care should be taken as the seeds are poisonous.
