Propagation
Sow fresh seed from autumn to spring in pots and in cold climates place in a cold frame. The seeds lose viability quickly.

Divide the rhizome during spring.


Botanic information
Leaf: The leaf has prominent veins and a prickly margin. The texture is leathery and the thick petiole is up to 2.5m (8ft) long, covered in sharp spines.

Flower: The tiny reddish-green flowers are arranged in a tall branched panicle that is up to 1m (3ft) and appears during summer.

Fruit: The small drupe is not commonly seen and the plant is normally reproduced vegetatively.
