Botanic information
Leaf: The broad ovate to cordate leaves have an acute apex and are pubescent to glabrous beneath. It has a petiole up to (65mm - 2½in) long that appears swollen at the base of the leaf. When young the leaves are bronze and turn yellow during autumn before falling.
Flower: The small crimson to pink, sometimes white papillionate flowers are arranged in a cluster along the stems of the previous year's growth. The flower buds consist of several overlapping scales, that are larger and rounder than the leaf buds and often clustered at each node. The flowers appear during early spring befor the leaves.
Fruit: The pendant brownish black pods (legumes) are flat and elongated, up to 75mm (3in) long and 12mm (½in) wide. Fruit may persist through winter. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively in order to maintain true to type.
