Botanic information
Leaf: The lax mid-green leaves are long-lanceolate and die back after the flowering period.
Flower: The flower shape is stellate to campanulate and has slightly nodding pedicle. There is up to 300 blooms arranged in a terminal raceme with bracts and is held above the foliage by a long leafless scape, appearing during late spring.
Fruit: The small loculicidal three angled capsule contains numerous ovoid to globose seeds. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
Culture
When planting out space the bulbs at intervals of 200mm (8in) during autumn at a depth of up to 150mm (6in).
The plant requires a minimum of four hours of direct light with a minimal temperature of 10ºC (50ºF) during night.
During the growing period keep moist and container plants may have a monthly application of fertiliser. After the growing period reduce or stop watering and fertilising then allow the bulbs to rest.
Container plants should be re-potted annually during spring and may be lifted during autumn.
