Propagation
Sow fresh seed during spring and in cold climates place in a cold frame.
Divide established clumps during spring or autumn.
Take root cuttings taken during winter.
Botanic information
Leaf: The oblong leaves are deeply lobed sometimes reaching the midrib and have spiny margins. The texture is soft and the leaves are upright to arching out from the plant. The leaves may die back during summer but are replaced prior to winter.
Flower: The white 2-lipped tubular flowers are accompanied by purple bracts that tend to form a hood. The flowers are arranged in an erect terminal raceme on a tall scape that appears from speing to early summer.
Fruit: The small fruit is a dry capsule and the seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
