Botanic information
Leaf: The leathery dark green sessile leaves are lanceolate to oblong and when crushed they smell poorly. The petiole is short and the apex is acute. The upper surface is strongly veined and the underside is pale green.

Flower: The unusually shaped crateriform flowers are composed of segments with 3-outer sepal-like and the 6-inner petal-like. They have a fruity fragrance and appear in a cluster in the leaf axils from late spring to early summer.

Fruit: The large fleshy berry (syncarp) is hart-shaped with bumps on the outer surface. The texture of the fruit is custard-like and must be eaten when fresh. Care should be taken not to chew the hard black seeds, as they are poisonous. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively in order to maintain true to type.
