Botanic information
Leaf: The costapalmate fronds have a stiff texture and are deeply lobed with linear segments almost to the base. The flattened petiole is up to 1200mm (4ft) long and has forward facing sharp spines along the margins. The base has a short sheath, which disintegrates into fibres.

Flower: The male and female flowers may appear on different plants or separately on one inflorescence. Tubular bracts enclose the stiff flattened axillary panicle that consists of numerous fleshy branches. The flowers have 3-sepals and petals with united stamens and appeare during summer.

Fruit: The variable drupe is globular to oblong and coloured orange-brown to yellow. The outer layer is slightly fleshy with a tough texture.
