Propagation
Sow fresh seeds during spring and maintain a temperature of 16º to 24ºC.

Take soft tip or semi-hardwood cuttings during late summer to early winter and apply bottom heat.

Note:
Under cultivation it is commonly treated as an annual with new seedlings or cuttings grown during spring.

Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are broad to narrow-ovate and the margin is entire to serrate or lobed. There is a large colour range including reds, yellows and greens that appear marginally or in patterns and blotches on the leaf surface. The apex is acute and the petiole is short.

Flower: The tiny 2 lipped labiate flowers have stamen filaments that are fused at the base. They are arranged in a spike-like panicle that appears predominantly during summer but often sporadically throughout the year. The flowers are usually pinched out to promote foliage growth.

Fruit: The small nutlets develop inside the calyx and produce small seeds with to 3500 per gram. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.

Culture
When growing Solenostemon scutellarioides(Coleus) in pots they require a minimal temperature of 10ºC (50ºF) and ample direct light. When watering keep the compost moist but not wet and use soft water and reduce watering throughout winter. It prefers a humid environment and misting the leaves during the daytime is beneficial, avoid drafts or dry positions.
When re-potting during spring cut back the foliage and place in a warm sunny position.
