Botanic information
Leaf: The large dark green ovate to orbicular leaves have 5 to 7 deep lobes. These are pinnately lobed and have a prominent vein. The large soft wooded petiole is up to 600 mm (2ft) long and radiates out and up from the trunk.
Flower: The large female funnelform flowers are appearing close to the stem and smaller male flowers are normally found on a separate plant. The female flowers appear solitary and the orange coloured male flowers are arranged on a long panicle. They appear during summer.
Fruit: The berry size varies from small round to large pyriform shape and is green ageing to yellow-green or yellow-orange. The seeds are small and black, found in the centre of the fruit. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
Culture
It is impossible to tell which gender the plant is until it flowers so when planting place 3 to 4 seedlings 250mm (10in) apart in two groups. After flowering remove all but one female in one group and all but one male in the other group. It will take between 18 to 24 months before fruit is produced.
