Propagation
Sow fresh seeds during spring in containers and in cool climates place in a cold frame.
Take semi-hardwood cuttings during summer.
Note:
Lavandula angustifoliais grown commercially around the world and is used in pot-pourri after being dried or used for oils and soaps.
Prune regularly to maintain a compact shape and encourage flowering using hedge clippers. Cutting back old woody plants hard may cause dieback.
Botanic information
Leaf: The linear to lanceolate grey-green leaves have entire margins that tend to be recurved. The apex is obtuse and the underside is covered in white tomentose.
Flower: The small 2-lipped tubulate flowers emerge between 2-ovate-pointed bracts and are arranged on a long stemmed cylindrical terminal spike. The flowers have 2-oil glands at the base and the flowers also contain a high nectar content, which attracts bees. They appear during mid-summer.
Fruit: The fruit is small nutlets and the seed is not normally set. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively in order to maintain true to type.
