Botanic information
Leaf: The light green imparipinnate leaves have 5 to 9 elliptical leaflets that are up to 125mm (5in) long, bronze-purple when young. The margin is entire to serrate and the apex is acute to acuminate. The leaves are aromatic when crushed.
Flower: Both the pendulous male catkins and the inconspicuous female flowers are borne on the previous year`s growth before the leaves appear during spring.
Fruit: The nut is inclosed in a thick indehiscent ovoid husk.
