Propagation
Sow fresh seeds during spring and maintain a temperature of 16º to 18º C. (61º to 64º F).
Take cuttings during late summer and placed on a misting bench.
Culture
The richer the soil is the faster and larger the tree will grow and it is Phytophthora resistant.
When pruning train to a single leader to form a tree habit, and regular tip pruning when young, will form a low dense shrubby habit. Plant may also be trimmed regularly to form a formal hedge.
Botanic information
Leaf: The leathery texture leaf is variable from ovate to obovate up to 30 mm (1? in) wide and is glossy green on the upper surface and dull green below. The apex is short acuminate and the base is cuneate.
Flower: The campanulate flowers have a short pedicle with bell shaped calix with up to 6-rounded lobes. The 6-rounded white to yellow petals fall as the flower develops with a mass of white-cream stamens that are arranged in whorls. Flowers appear in a panicle at the branch tips from late spring to early summer.
Fruit: The purple to red oval berry is up to 15 mm (? in) wide and crowned by the persistent calyx rim. It has a fleshy outer coat and is sweet to taste when ripe. It contains a solitary viable seed but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
