Sow fresh seed during spring and maintain a temperature of 16º to 18º C. (61º to 64º F)
Botanic information
Leaf: The true leaves are reduced to scales with teeth and are arranged in whorls of 6 to 8 around the stem at the joints. There are obvious ridges running along the stems.
Flower: The tan-coloured male flowers are erect and appear at the end of the branches and female flowers normally appear on a different plant (dioecious) from autumn to winter.
Fruit: The small cylindrical cone-like fruit has pointed ends and slightly rounded protruding valves. The dark shinny seeds have a long viability period and is spread by birds or dispersed by gravity. Seeds germinate after fire or disturbance.
