Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green leaves are elliptical-ovate for (var.latifolius) and lanceolate-linear for (var. augustifolius). The leaf base is twisted with no petiole and the upper surface has longitudinal veins.
Flower: The white to mauve-pink crateriform flowers have 6-perianth segments with the inner 3 fringed. They appear in the upper leaf axils in a pendant cluster of 4 to 6 and appear from spring to early summer.
Fruit: The fleshy round capsule contains numerous seeds that are black with a white aril that remains attached to the placenta after the valves have opened. The seed is dispersed by birds and gravity. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
