Propagation
Sow fresh seed during early spring in pots and place in a cold frame to germinate.
Note:
Care should be taken when selecting a site, allowing ample room for it to grow as it has vigorous invasive roots that can lift concrete and block drains.
Botanic information
Leaf: The 4-ranked flattened scale leaves have white bands of stomata on the underside and are broad spatulate in shape. The divided branchlets are arranged oppositely in flattened sprays in one plane.
Flower: The dark violet male flowers are cylindrical and the smaller spherical female strobilis are blue black. They appear during spring.
Fruit: The cones consist of 6 to 8 scales with pointed apexes, which open to release the winged seeds that are dispersed by wind. The small seeds are viable but the plant may be easily reproduced vegetatively.
