Propagation
Pre-soak seed in warm water for 12 hours and sow during spring. Germination of this plant is erratic and bottom heat helps.
Botanic information
Leaf: The large bright green lanceolate leaves have a bright red midrib on the underside and the petiole is long and fleshy. The thin textured leaves are easily damaged in windy conditions.
Flower: The small white cyathiform flowers are concealed by red bracts and are arranged in a pendulous spike on a scape that is up to 3m (10ft) long. The flowers appear during spring.
Fruit: The banana-like berry is leathery with a dry pulp and containing several globose smooth seeds. It is not normally eaten and after fruiting the plant dies.
