Propagation
Sow fresh seed during spring and maintain a temperature of 16º to 27º C. (61º to 81º F).

This plant can be transplanted when mature, with care.

Culture
Once established this plant requires little maintenance. It responds to mulching and should be kept moist. Care should be taken not to disturb the roots, particularly when transplanting from containers.

Botanic information
Leaf: The arching pinnate fronds are up to 250 mm (10 in) wide have up to 150 leathery sickle-shaped (falcate) leaflets that have a pointed apex. The spent fronds may form a skirt around the trunk and the new fronds appear on the plant every second year in a cluster from the centre of the crown.

Flower: The inflorescence appears in the centre of the leaf rosette with the male cone-like structure reaching up to 800mm (44in) tall and the female is composed of modified leaves that have ovules on the margins. It appears nest-like and felty during spring on a different plant (dioecious).

Fruit: The large ovoid nut-like yellow to red pome has a fleshy outer coat and is produced in a nest-like group inside the leaf rosette.

Note
This plant responds to a light fertilising and is able to fix nitrogen from the air through a symbiotic relationship with blue green algae. It also rots in wet soils and when grown indoors it is highly susceptible to scale insects and mealy bugs.
