Propagation
Divide the thick fleshy rhizome during spring.
Sow fresh seed during spring and maintain 21º to 18º C.
Note:
As a weed it is controlled by physical removal of the plant and the rhizome using a mattock. Glyphosate is generally ineffective unless poured into the rhizome.
Botanic information
Leaf: The dark glossy green large lanceolate leaves have a soft-leathery texture with a prominent mid rib and are up to 150 mm (6 in) wide. The apex is acute and the petiole clasp the stem.
Flower: The tubulate flowers have yellow petals and bright red filaments. They are arranged in a broad cylindrical, terminal raceme that is up to 350mm (14in) long and appears during late summer.
Fruit: The capsule is small with an orange inner surface and the seed have a red aril. They are is dispersed by birds or water and in garden refuse. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
