Botanic information
Leaf: Ligule: membranous with a ciliate margin
Collar: broad and divided
Auricles: absent.
The long mid-green linear leaves are upright and arching.

Flower: The inflorescence is a spatheate panicle that has groups of spikelets that surround a single fertile spikelet, which is awned. The flower heads are purple-brown when mature and appear from summer to autumn..

Fruit: Fresh seed should be stored for four months before sowing to help overcome dormancy. Seed yield is low due to the number of sterile spikelets. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
