Botanic information
Leaf: The thick fleshy dark red to blue-green leaves are oblong to lanceolate with an acuminate apex that may have a sharp point. The margins are bristle-fringed to entire and the leaves are arranged in a rosette up to 25 to 100 mm (4in) in diameter.
Flower: The small stellate (star-shaped) flowers are red-purple to green-yellow and are arranged in a tall terminal panicle-like cyme that appears during summer. After flowering the rosettes of leaves die off and are replaced with the new offset plants.
Fruit: The small star-shaped follicle contains tiny seeds that have no endosperm. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced by division.
