Botanic information
Leaf: The reniform to broad ovate dark green leaves have a crenate to serrate margin and a cordate base. They are held erect on a long slender petiole.

Flower: The funnelform to rotate flowers have 5-expanding lobes with the 2-upper and 3-lower petals that are spurred. The throat is marked with small white lines and the flower appears on a long pedicle from winter to early spring. Cultivars are available in single and double flowers.

Fruit: The small dehiscent papery capsule splits open with 3-boat-shaped valves and containing numerous small nut-like seeds that have a fleshy endosperm that is oily, and are commonly disbursed by ants.
The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
