Divide established clumps (rhizome) during winter to early spring while dormant.
Botanic information
Leaf: The bright green lanceolate leaves have and entire margin that is undulating with an acute apex and a long petiole. The upper surface has silver green markings and the underside is purplish. They are clustered at the base and the sheath opens oppositely.
Flower: The white tubulate flowers have a corolla tube that splits on one side with 3-lanceolate petals and a staminodia lip that may be lobed. The flowers are arranged in a terminal spike that is up to80mm (3in) long and appear from the base of the plant during early summer.
Fruit: The small capsule is not commonly seen and the plant is normally reproduced vegetatively.
Note
The rhizomes and young shoots are collected and eaten raw or added to rice as a turmeric substitute in cooking.
