Propagation
Sow fresh seed during summer but they may be difficult to germinate. Try soaking seeds in concentrated sulphuric acid for 20 minutes prior to sowing.
Take cuttings during the growing period.
Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are elliptical to broad-lanceolate with an acuminate apex and stipules are present at the base of the petiole. The texture is leathery and the underside is dull green.
Flower: The male flowers are arranged in an axillary cluster on a slender peduncle and the female flowers are solitary on short pedicle. They appear during spring.
Fruit: The smooth orb-shaped capsule is depressed in the centre, pumpkin-like and is dispersed by birds. Each loculus has a pair of flattened seeds that are covered by a red aril. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
