Propagation
Stratify fresh seeds for 2 to 3 months at 5º C (41ºF) then sow in spring and maintain a temperature of 19º to 27º C. (66º to 81º F). Seeds may be sown directly into the ground or in containers.
Greenwood cuttings taken during early summer and dipped into hormone powder, then placed in a well-drained media.
T- or chip bud ontoup rootstock during spring.
Botanic information
Leaf: The glaborous dull green elliptical to obovate leaves range in size from 40 mm (1? in) to 100 mm (4 in) long by 25 mm (1 in) to 50 mm (2 in) wide. It has a cuneate base and an acute to obtuse apex. The petiole is up to 20 mm (µ in) long and the margins are slightly crenate to serrate.
Flower: The white rotate flowers are up to 25 mm (1 in) wide with ovate sepals and 5-obovate petals. The pedicle is up to 12 mm (½ in) long and the flowers appear solitary or in a small cluster on short spurs on 1-year old wood and appear before the foliage during early spring.
Fruit: The globose to oblong dark purple, red, green or yellow drupe is fleshy with a single hard centre (stone) pea size and is up to 25 mm (1 in) or more in diameter. They have a sweet juicy flesh and the seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
