Botanic information
Leaf: The stiff grass-like linear leaves have margins that end with 2 to 3 sharp teeth and the upper surface tends to be concave forming a "V" shape. The texture is leathery and the leaves arch with age.
Flower: The tiny male and female flowers appear on different plants (dioecious). They are arranged in dense spike that is up to 350mm (14 in) long and are held above the foliage on flattened scape that is up to 150 mm (6 in) long.
The small male flower is cylindrical up to 3.5 mm long and a slightly larger similar female flower. The yellowish to cream flowers are surrounded by shiny brown tepals and between each flower there are straw coloured spiny bracts. They appear from late spring to early summer.
Fruit: The small, bronze-green berry-like capsules are borne in dense clusters along the flower spike. The fruit is persistent on the plant and the seeds germinate freely in bare soil in an open position. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively in order to maintain true to type.
