Botanic information
Leaf: The ensiform leaves are long and dark green with a glaucous green underside and stand erect radiating from the base. The apex is long acuminate and the texture is thick-leathery.
Flower: The red to orange tubulate flowers have protruding stamens and are arranged in a terminal panicle on a reddish-brown leafless scape that is up to 5m (15ft) tall. They appear from late spring to early summer and are bird attractive.
Fruit: The fruit is a papery pale brown capsule with black seeds that ripens in winter. The small seeds are viable but the cultivars are normally reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
