Propagation
Sow ripe seeds and maintain a temperature of 19º to 27º C. (66º to 81º F).
Take stem cuttings from summer to autumn.
The downward growing rhizomes main function is to store food.
Culture
The plants may prune to encourage branching and older plants may be reduced to almost ground level to rejuvenate.
Botanic information
Leaf: The lanceolate leaves are up to 127mm (5 in) wide and the colour varies from green to red and taper to an acuminate apex. The petiole is slender and channelled above and is up to 180mm (7in) long and the leaves are arranged spirally too alternately.
Flower: The shallow cyathiform (cup-shaped) flowers are 6-tepalled with exserted stamens that have yellow anthers. They are arranged in a large upright terminal panicle that appears from spring to early summer.
Fruit: The spherical berries are blue, red or purple and are arranged in large pendant clusters. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively, to maintain true to type.
