Propagation
Divide the clump into large segments during early spring. This job may be difficult due to the strong root system and the plant is slow to recover.

Culture
Be careful when planting as the roots are strong and may block drained or lift pathways. This large perennial requires ample room to grow and tolerate neglect.

Botanic information
Leaf: The large dull green to greyish-green elliptic to oblong (banana-like) leaves stand erect on long petioles in a fan-like formation on either side of the trunk. The leathery textured leaves tend to fold upwards with recurved margins and are up to 600 mm (2 ft) wide and tend to tear into segments in windy positions.

Flower: The tubulate flower has a blue corolla that is partly encloses by the whitish sepals. There are 4 to 10 flowers clustered in a pointed chestnutcolouredspathe with a short peduncleand resemble a crested bird. They are arranged in an axillary cyme towards the top of the plant and appear from spring to summer.

Fruit: The three celled capsule contains small dark blue seeds that have a hard seed coat. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
