Propagation
Sow fresh seeds and keep moist with bottom heat and plant up into deep pots. Fresh seed germinates in 6 to 12 weeks.
Botanic information
Leaf: The costapalmate fronds are up to 1m (3ft) wide and the mid rib extends from the petiole. The pointed linear glossy dark green segments radiate from the top of the petiole and are pendant. The petiole is up to 3 m (10 ft) long and has downward pointing spines along the margins in the lower half when young.
Flower: The creamy yellow bisexual crateriform flowers are arranged on a pendulous branched panicle that is up to 900mm (3ft) long. They appearing from the leaf bases and the inflorescence is sheathed in brown bracts that have a woolly appearance.
Generally
The bisexual flowers have 3-united sepals and 3-larger ovate petals that are valvate at the apex. The 6-stamens are united at the base and the flower has 3-cells with a separate 1-celled segment and is united at the top to form a single style with a tiny stigma. They are arranged on the rachillae singularly or in a cluster and may have a short pedicle.
Fruit: The almost sessile spherical berry is reddish-brown to black with a dull thin waxy coat.
