Propagation
The seeds take 2 to 3 months to germinate and seedling variation is common. Pot up soon after germination into deep pots.

Culture
Care should be taken when planting, as it has strong roots and nasty spines on the base of the leaves.


Botanic information
Leaf: The crown has up to 200 imparipinnate fronds that are ascending at first then hang downwards. They have pointed dull green leaflet that are up to 200 mm (7µ in) long and some become sharp spines towards the base.

Flower: The creamy yellow crateriform male and female flowers appear on separate trees (dioecious). The large pendant panicle arises from a leaf base and is up to 2m (6ft) long, appearing during late spring.

Fruit: The drupes are globose to ovoid and contain wrinkled seeds. They appear in heavy clusters and are dispersed by birds and the crown is a breeding site for Indian Mynas, which are a pest in some countries.
