Propagation
Stratify the seeds for 2 to 3 months during winter in peat and then sow seeds in pots and place them in a cold frame. Germination may take up to 9 months.
Take soft tip cuttings of non-flowering shoots during late spring and semi hardwood cuttings during late summer.
Botanic information
Leaf: The ovate outlined leaves have 3-main lobes and are up to 150mm (6in) wide. The base is truncate with a petiole up to 12mm (½in) long. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs or in groups of three and turn scarlet during autumn before falling.
Flower: The white sterile outer flowers are tubulate to funnelform with 5-expanded petals. The inner fertile flowers have yellow anthers. They are arranged in large conspicuous flat stalked cyme that is up to 80mm (3in) wide and appear during spring.
Fruit: The globose berry-like drupe is bright red and persists on the plant throughout winter, becoming shrivelled. The small seeds are viable but the plant may be easily reproduced vegetatively.
The cultivar 'Sterile' produces no fruit.
