Propagation
Stratify seeds for 2 to 3 months during winter in peat at a temperature of 1.1º to 5º C. (34º to 41º F). Sow the seeds in pots then place them in a cold frame to germinate.
Note:
Care should be taken when selecting a site allowing ample room for it to grow as it has vigorous roots that can lift concrete and block drains.
Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green linear leaves are densely arranged along the stems and are pointing forward. The underside is distinctive with silvery stomata and has a notched apex. When crushed the leaves have an orange peel odor.
Flower: The purplish male flowers are up to 3mm (?in) indiameter and appear throughout the crown. The female cones are upright, green and purplish to 150mm (6in) tall and found only towards the top of the crown. Both appear on the same tree during spring.
Fruit: The cylindrical cones are produced in upper parts of the tree and are green during summer becoming brown in autumn. They are 120 x 50 mm (4µin x 2in) in size and have protruding bracts that are bent downwards. It normally takes 2 years to mature and then they disintegrate and release the seeds.
