Sow fresh seeds during autumn as soon as they are collected. Select seedlings with best autumn foliage colour.
Botanic information
Leaf: The pinnate leaves are composed of 10 to 12 pairs of sessile lanceolate leaflets that have an acute apex and are odorous when crushed. They turn yellow-orange to scarlet during autumn before falling and the leaf has a pubescent petiole up to 100mm (4in) long.
Flower: The small male and female flowers appear on separate trees and are formed in the axils of leaves. The male flowers are arranged in a panicle that is up to 100mm (4in) long and the female flowers appear in a loose panicle that is up to 250mm (10in) long before the leaves during spring.
Fruit: The ovoid stalked drupe is up to 7 mm (¥ in)wide and is red turning to blue and persists on the female tree.
