Propagation
Sow seed as soon as ripe in containers during autumn.
The better autumn coloured trees can be budded in late spring onto 2 year old understock.
Note:
Care should be taken when selecting a sight allowing ample room for it to grow as it has vigorous roots that can lift concrete and block drains.
Botanic information
Leaf: The palmate leaves have 5 to 7 lobes with an acuminate apex and a cordate base. The upper surface is dark glossy green and turn red, orange to yellow during autumn before falling. The underside is downy at first and the petiole is slender up to 100mm (4in) long.
Flower: The male flowers are arranged in a small panicle that is up to 100mm (4in) long and appears on the young twigs. The female appear as globose heads on stalks and are enlarge to 40mm (1½in) wide and are covered in soft spines. Both appear with the new leaves during spring separately but on the same tree.
Fruit: The persistent small fruit is round and composed of numerous dehiscent spiky brown capsules. They are produced on long slender peduncles and the small winged seeds are brown. Fallen seed heads are a maintenance problem in urban areas.
