Propagation
Scarified the seeds in sulphuric acid for up to 2-hours prior to sowing in spring.
Graft on to 2 to 3 year old understock from late winter to spring.
Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are fern-like pinnate to bipinnate with 20 to 30 oblong leaflets that are up to 40mm (1½in) long. The leaflet apex is obtuse and the small lateral buds are scaled or naked enclosed by the base of the petiole. During autumn they turn golden colour before falling.
Flower: The female and male flowers appear on separate clusters on the same tree. The male catkins are up to 50mm (2in) long and are protected by thorns and spines appearing in early summer.
Fruit: The reddish-brown to yellow pods are large and twisted, becoming constricted around the seeds. It splits to release hard glossy brown seeds.
