Propagation
Sow seed as soon as it is ripe during autumn and select best coloured specimens to plant out.
The remainder plants may be used as grafting understock.
Culture
Care should be taken when pruning as the milky sap is poisonous.
Botanic information
Leaf: The glabrous leaves are rhombic-ovate with an abrupt acuminate apex and a broad cuneate to truncated base. The slender petiole is up to 50 mm (2 in) long with two glands at the junction of the blade. During autumn the foliage turns reddish during autumn. In warm zones the tree will stay evergreen and still display its autumn colour.
The grayish globose buds are to 3 mm (? in) long and have two pubescence scales.
Flower: The small apetalous flowers are arranged in a catkin-like spike that is up to 100 mm (4 in) long with 3 to 7 male flowers at the apex and 1-5 female flowers at the base. They appear during summer.
Fruit: The 3-valved capsules are arranged in clustersof 1-5 and containthree large waxy white seeds.
