Propagation
Stratify seeds for 1 to 2 months during winter in peat and sow seeds in pots, then place in a glasshouse with bottom heat.

Take semi hardwood cuttings up to 150mm (6in) long during early summer and keep moist.

Take root division during the growing period.

General pruning information.
Prune the long shoots back to a node from winter to early spring.

Note:
This plant is regarded as a weedin many regions as it can self-sow or spread vegetatively readily and is discouraged from use in gardens.


Botanic information
Leaf: The palmate leaves have 3-5 obovate leaflets that are up to 100mm (4in) long with short stalks up to 12mm (½in) long. The digitatively compound drooping leaves have long petioles up to 80mm (3in) long and the fragrant leaves turn purple-mauve during autumn.

Flower: The pistillate and staminate flowers both appear on the same pendant axillary raceme (monoecious). The crateriform flowers have 3-concave sepals and appear at the same time as the new foliage during spring.

Fruit: The purplish berry has a waxy covering and the small seeds are black and numerous, embedded in the interior white flesh. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
