Propagation
Sow fresh seed when ripe in containers and place in a cold frame or sow in a prepared bed. Seeds may require some stratification.
Graft onto species root stock for best foliage colour.
Botanic information
Leaf: The 4-sided needle-like acicular leaves are stiff and appeart on woody pegs. They have 3 to 6 stomatic bands on all sides.
Flower: The yellow-orange male pollen cones appearin the leaf axils towards the end of the branches. The female cones are up to 50mm (2in) long and are upright at first then bend over becoming pendulous and appear during spring.
Fruit: The light brown cylindrical cone is pendulous and falls in one piece during the second season. The cone is sessile or on a short stalk with stiff spreading scales and the light brown, broad seed has an oblique wing to 14mm (½in) wide.
