Propagation
Sow fresh seeds in boxes or directly to bed in warm areas during late summer. Cool areas sow in late winter and protect from frost.
Germination in 2 to 3 weeks then space 250mm (10in) apart for tall species and 120mm (5in) apart for dwarf species and protect seedlings from frost.
Botanic information
Leaf: The sessile lanceolate leaves are slightly pubescent and have an entire to serrate margin.
Flower: The labiate flowers have a bottom lobe with one lip and the upper lip is notched into 4 pouch-like petals and is attached to the 5-parted calyx. The flowers are arranged in a terminal raceme that appears during spring.
Fruit: The tiny 2-locular capsule contains many small seeds with up to 3500 per gram and are very viable.
