Botanic information
Leaf: The leathery bilobed leaves normally fall during early spring and the new leaves are up to 60 mm (2? in) wide with a cordate base and a long slender petiole. Each lobe has an acute apex and 11-yellowish veins.

Flower: The funnelform flowers have 5-spreading pink-magenta petals with dark purple markings on the standard. They are arranged in a terminal raceme that appears on one year old shoots, commonly on bare stems before the leaves during spring. The flower colour can vary from red to purple as a result of seedling variation.

Fruit: The large persistent flattened pod matures brown and is up to 25 mm (1 in) wide. It has a leathery texture and contains numerous seeds that are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
